How to Install Extra NIO Cards into an Existing NEURO Unit

Given the high number of different configurations possible in a NEURO, the pictures for each step may not perfectly match the configuration of your NEURO.

Getting Started

1- Remove the top cover of the NEURO unit using a Phillips-head screwdriver (7x screws). Put the screws aside (do not throw them out).

2- Unscrew the front panel (4x screws in the front, 2x screws underneath the unit) and put the screws aside (do not throw them out).

3- Disconnect the cable from the top right hand side of the front panel.

4- Disconnect the cable from the bottom right hand side of the front panel.

5- Pictured below is the numbered placement of the I/O cards in a NEURO. Most people with an existing NEURO should have at least one I/O card already installed, in addition to the Main card. You must install any additional NIO cards following the order of the numbers indicated (2 before 3, 3 before 4, etc.). Furthermore, it is recommended to install NIO-5R cards first, then NIO-8D cards, then NIO-8A cards. Regarding this, you can disregard the cards you already have pre-installed, e.g. if you already have a NIO-8A installed in your existing NEURO, do not uninstall it to install a new NIO-5R before it, simply stick to the order for the cards you are installing yourself.

Installing a new card in position 2

If you already have a NIO card installed in position 2, go to the next section.

1- Remove the plate that covers the hole on the back panel of the NEURO for this slot.

2- Set the three jumpers (JUMPER-3A) provided with your NIO card as follows:

JP3 Position0
JP2 Position1
JP1 Position0
IO Card Position 2 Jumper Placement

3- If you will be installing a NIO card in position 3, attach the cable provided to reference position J2 on the NIO card .

4- Connect the new NIO card to the previous one using the cable already attached.

5- Insert the NIO card into the NEURO, making sure the long green connector goes through the slot in the back.

6- Secure the NIO card using the screws provided or the hex standoffs provided. Use the screws if you will not be installing a NIO card in position 5. Use the hex standoffs if you will be installing a NIO card in position 5.

Installing a new card in position 3

If you already have a NIO card installed in position 3, go to the next section.

1- Remove the plate that covers the hole on the back panel of the NEURO for this slot.

2- Set the three jumpers (JUMPER-3A) provided with your NIO card as follows:

JP3 Position0
JP2 Position1
JP1 Position1
IO Card Position 3 Jumper Placement

3- If you will be installing a NIO in position 4 as well, make sure to attach the cable to reference position J2 on the card.

4- Connect the new NIO card to the previous one using the cable already attached.

5- Insert the NIO card into the NEURO, making sure the green connector goes through the slot in the back.

6- Secure the NIO card using the screws provided or the hex standoffs provided. Use the screws if you will not be installing a NIO card in position 4. Use the hex standoffs if you will be installing a NIO card in position 4.

Installing a new card in position 4

If you already have a NIO card installed in position 4, go to the next section.

1- Remove the plate that covers the hole on the back panel of the NEURO for this slot.

2- Set the three jumpers (JUMPER-3A) provided with your NIO card as follows:

JP3 Position1
JP2 Position0
JP1 Position0
IO Card Position 4 Jumper Placement

3- If you will be installing a NIO card in position 5, attach the cable provided to reference position J3 on the NIO card.

4- If applicable, remove the screws from the card in position 3 and replace with hex standoffs. Put the screws aside to use later.

5- Connect the new NIO card to the previous one using the cable already attached.

6- Insert the NIO card into the NEURO, making sure the green connector goes through the slot in the back.

7- Secure the NIO card using the screws that were put aside earlier, or using the screws provided with the NIO.

Installing a new card in position 5

1- Remove the plate that covers the hole on the back panel of the NEURO for this slot.

2- Set the three jumpers (JUMPER-3A) provided with your NIO card as follows:

JP3 Position1
JP2 Position0
JP1 Position1
IO Card Position 5 Jumper Placement

3- If applicable, remove the screws from the card in position 2 and replace with hex standoffs. Put the screws aside to use later.

4- Connect the new NIO card to the previous one using the cable already attached.

5- Insert the NIO card into the NEURO, making sure the green connector goes through the slot in the back.

6- Secure the NIO card using the screws that were put aside earlier, or using the screws provided with the NIO.

Note: NIO cards in position 5 are not attached to anything on the right side.

Final Steps

1- Line up your front panel with your NEURO body and take note of the slots that correspond with NIO-8D and NIO-8A cards (cards with the blue DIP switches). Remove the stickers on the front panel for those slots. DO NOT remove stickers for the slots that correspond with NIO-5R cards or empty card slots.

2- Remove the metal punch-outs that are under the stickers you removed by gently twisting them by hand to break them loose. A pair of pliers may be used on the centerpiece being removed if needed. DO NOT remove the punch-outs for slots that correspond with NIO-5R cards or empty card slots.

3- Peel off the center cutout of the front labels as shown below. These labels are provided only with NIO-8D and NIO-8A cards.

4- Carefully place these labels over the corresponding slots on the front panel as shown in the example below (8D stickers over the slots lined up with 8D cards, 8A stickers over the slots lined up with 8A cards).

5- Reattach the cable connected to the Main card to the front panel. Then reattach the cable connected to the back of the unit to the front panel. Make sure to connect the cables in the correct direction.

6- Screw on the front panel using the same screws that were put aside earlier. (4x screws in the front, 2x screws underneath the unit).

7- Place the labels on the pluggable terminal blocks. Cut off any excess.

8- Place the corresponding label on the back panel. Make sure to place the labels under the slot that matches the NIO card inside according to the table below.

NIO-8D
NIO-8A
NIO-5R

9- Place the numbered stickers on the pluggable terminal blocks. The number on the terminal block should be on the same side as the number on the back panel of the NEURO when plugged in.

10- Plug in the terminal blocks.

11- Screw the top cover back into place using the same screws that were put aside earlier.

You have now completed the installation of your new NIO cards!
