<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AXON/NEURO units can be used to provide simple I/O expansion for Davicom&#8217;s Cortex units, or for any other MODBUS master device. In MODBUS Mode, the hamburger menu is as shown below: Most System settings are the same as for Standalone Mode, except that the Home / IP Parameters section will be different. The SNMP tab is replaced by the Modbus TCP tab and there are no Email or Axon/Neuro Command server tabs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a new, non-configured AXON/NEURO is connected to the same network as a Davicom Cortex it will be detected automatically and added as a Modbus expansion unit. Similar to adding a MEXM expansion device to the Davicom Cortex, users may also click the <strong>Detect</strong> button in the Davicom Cortex menu under <strong>Devices</strong> > <strong>AXON &amp; NEURO.</strong> Make sure the IP address of the AXON or NEURO is visible to the Davicom Cortex so that it can detect it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This tutorial focuses on configuring the NEURO series to allow the &#8220;MASTER NEURO&#8221; to control a remote relay connected to another NEURO unit (&#8220;REMOTE NEURO&#8221;). The user must ensure the firmware version is <strong>1.3.11 or higher</strong>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Prerequisites</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1. <strong>Firmware Requirement</strong>: Ensure both NEURO units are running firmware<br>version 1.3.11 or higher.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2. <strong>Serial Connection Setup</strong>: Verify the serial connection between the MASTER NEURO and REMOTE NEURO is correctly configured.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Serial Connection Parameters</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Baud Rate</strong>: 9600</li>



<li><strong>Data Bits</strong>: 8</li>



<li><strong>Parity</strong>: None</li>



<li><strong>Stop Bit</strong>: 1</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3. <strong>Relay Card Installed</strong>: A relay card must be installed in the REMOTE NEURO.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Configuration Steps</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">On the REMOTE NEURO</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set the SITE ID:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Navigate to the <strong>SITE ID</strong> submenu in the system configuration menu.</li>



<li>Assign a unique SITE ID to this NEURO (e.g., 100).</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Identify the Relay:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Connect the relay and configure it. Note its relay ID, which follows the format 2R3, where:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>2 is the relay card&#8217;s position.</li>



<li>R3 is the third relay on the card.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li>Example: 2R3 means the relay is the third on the second relay card.</li>
</ol>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">On the MASTER NEURO</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set the SITE ID:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Navigate to the <strong>SITE ID</strong> submenu in the system configuration menu.</li>



<li>Assign a unique SITE ID to this NEURO (e.g., 101).</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Navigate to Remote Command Setup:</p>

<li>Go to <strong>AXON/NEURO Remote Command</strong> under the <strong>Outputs Configuration</strong> menu.</li>

<li>Out of the available 8 slots (1RCX), select one that is not in use.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Configure the Remote Relay Communication:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Mode</strong>: Select Serial from the dropdown menu.</li>



<li><strong>SITE ID</strong>: Enter the SITE ID of the REMOTE NEURO (100 in this example).</li>



<li><strong>Target Output ID</strong>: Enter the relay ID (2R3).</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Optional</strong>: Set an alarm call list to be notified of command failures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Testing the Setup</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1. Test the remote relay control by activating the configured relay via the MASTER NEURO interface.</p>

The example demonstrates sending a temperature alarm from the NEURO to the Davicom CORTEX and controlling a relay based on the alarm state.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Serial Communication Setup</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">NEURO Setup</h3>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Connect a DB9 serial cable to the serial port located at the back of the NEURO unit.</li>
</ol>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Davicom CORTEX 320 Setup</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1. Connect a USB-to-RS232 adapter to the USB port of the Davicom CORTEX 320.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2. Log in to the Davicom CORTEX 320 web interface.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3. Navigate to <strong>Devices</strong> > <strong>USB Serial</strong>.</p>

<li>In the <strong>Active</strong> and <strong>Normal</strong> fields, provide relevant descriptions (e.g., &#8220;Temperature High&#8221; and &#8220;Temperature Normal&#8221;).</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">4. Assign a <strong>Trigger</strong>:</p>

<li>Log in to the Davicom CORTEX and navigate to <strong>Inputs</strong> > <strong>Command Flags</strong>.</li>



<li>Identify a free command flag (e.g., <strong>1C001</strong>).</li>
</ul>

<li>Assign the <strong>1U1</strong> command to the identified Davicom CORTEX Command Flag (<strong>1C001</strong>).</li>



<li>Adjust retries and delays as needed for communication performance.</li>



<li>Specify the <strong>Site ID</strong> of the Davicom CORTEX:

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1. Trigger the temperature alarm on the NEURO (e.g., by exceeding the configured temperature threshold).</p>

<li>The Davicom CORTEX receives the alarm and updates the status of the corresponding command flag.</li>



<li>The relay on the Davicom CORTEX is activated as configured.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3. Adjust settings (e.g., retries, delays) if communication is not consistent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You have successfully set up Unit-to-Unit communication between the NEURO and Davicom CORTEX using RS-232. The NEURO sends a temperature alarm, and the Davicom CORTEX activates a relay in response. This setup can be extended to other scenarios by configuring additional inputs, outputs, or relays.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">5- Pictured below is the numbered placement of the I/O cards in a NEURO. Most people with an existing NEURO should have at least one I/O card already installed, in addition to the Main card. You must install any additional NIO cards following the order of the numbers indicated (2 before 3, 3 before 4, etc.). Furthermore, it is recommended to install NIO-5R cards first, then NIO-8D cards, then NIO-8A cards. Regarding this, you can disregard the cards you already have pre-installed, e.g. if you already have a NIO-8A installed in your existing NEURO, do not uninstall it to install a new NIO-5R before it, simply stick to the order for the cards you are installing yourself.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To measure VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) using Davicom products such as the BPS1050 or BPS5095 RF Power Sensors, follow these steps:</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">System Set Up</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1- Connect the <strong>transmitter end</strong> of the BPS to your transmitter.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2- Attach the <strong>antenna end</strong> of the BPS to either an inline power meter (to verify power output) or directly to the load if the transmitter power is already known.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3- Connect the <strong>forward power</strong> and <strong>reflected power</strong> voltage terminals of the BPS to separate metering inputs on your Davicom RTU.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Metering Inputs Configuration Using the Web Interface</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Configure the metering inputs for Forward Power and Reflected Power through the RTU&#8217;s web interface:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1- Open a web browser and connect to the Davicom RTU&#8217;s web interface using its IP address.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2- Navigate to <strong>Inputs &gt; Metering Inputs</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3- For each metering input:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Select the input connected to the Forward Power terminal of the BPS.</li>



<li>Configure the following parameters:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Description:</strong> Forward Power</li>



<li><strong>Measurement Unit:</strong> Watts (or as applicable)</li>



<li><strong>Normal Value:</strong> Enter the typical forward power value for your setup.</li>



<li><strong>Calibration Coefficients:</strong> Input the specific coefficients (A, B, C) from the BPS documentation based on the operational frequency:

<li><strong>BPS1050 at 170 MHz:</strong> A = 8.9053, B = 4.4987, C = 0</li>



<li><strong>BPS5095 at 870 MHz:</strong> A = 4.5311, B = 3.0904, C = 0</li>
</ul>

</li>



<li>Repeat this process for the metering input connected to the Reflected Power terminal, adjusting the description accordingly.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BPS Calibration</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Accurate calibration ensures the Davicom RTU&#8217;s forward power reading matches the actual transmitter output:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1- <strong>Use a Reference Meter:</strong> Set up an inline power meter between the BPS and the load to act as your reference.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2- <strong>Turn On the Transmitter:</strong> Power up the transmitter and stabilize its output.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3- <strong>Adjust the Calibration Trimmer:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Locate the forward voltage calibration trimmer on the BPS sensor.</li>



<li>Using a small insulated screwdriver, gently adjust the trimmer while monitoring the forward power reading on the Davicom RTU.</li>



<li>Continue adjusting until the forward power reading displayed by the Davicom RTU matches the reference value shown on the inline power meter.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Automatic VSWR Calculation Configuration</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the metering inputs are calibrated, you can set up automatic VSWR calculation:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1- Navigate to <strong>Inputs &gt; Math Functions</strong> in the RTU&#8217;s web interface.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2- Choose an available math function slot.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3- In the <strong>Operator</strong> dropdown menu, select the <strong>SWR</strong> function.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Field A (Reflected Power):</strong> Enter the ID for the metering input connected to the reflected power terminal of the BPS.<br>For example, if Reflected Power is connected to Metering Input 8, the ID will typically be 1A8.</li>



<li><strong>Field B (Forward Power):</strong> Enter the ID for the metering input connected to the forward power terminal of the BPS.<br>For example, if Forward Power is connected to Metering Input 7, the ID will typically be 1A7.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a NEURO has multiple I/O boards installed, the following numbering convention is used to identify each board.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The physical slot into which a board is installed always represents the I/O identifier prefix.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, if an Analog Board is installed in slot 1, its ID prefix will be 1. So inputs it would be 1A1 to 1A8.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the same board would be moved to slot 2, its input ID would change to 2A1 to 2A8. On this last example, if a Digital Board is installed in vacated slot 1, then the Digital I/O would be 1D1 to 1D8. If a relay board is installed in slot 3, then the relays would be identified as 3R1 to 3R5.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A NEURO with 5 Analog Boards would have 40 inputs identified as: 1A1 to 1A8, 2A1 to 2A8, 3A1 to 3A8 … 5A1 to 5A8.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Note that the numbering convention is different when the NEURO is used in MODBUS mode. See <a href="https://dex.davicom.com/kb/axon-neuro-as-a-modbus-unit/">this article</a> for details on the register structure.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the SNMP MIB, the I/O OID’s all follow a continuous numbering scheme similar to the MODBUS convention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the next step, please connect a network (Ethernet) cable between the AXON/NEURO and your computer.
